Westonka Sailing

Sailboat Club

Westonka Sailing welcomes adults of all sailing abilities, from beginners to experts.  We provide a great opportunity to sail throughout the summer on Upper Lake Minnetonka.  We depart from our Marina in a park-like setting on Enchanted Island

If any of these describes you, we’re the answer to your sailing interests:

·  Want to learn sailing in a fun social environment at your own pace?

·  Want to enhance your sailing skills and have access to sailboats any time without the cost and overhead of owning one?

·  Want to sail your Westonka sailboat in Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club (UMYC) races?

When can you sail

Westonka Sailing organizes Tuesday and Thursday evening Club Sailing sessions throughout the season.

Once you have achieved the status of "Skipper" you can fine-tune your skills during Monday Race Clinics

Those that choose to progress to a racing level, may participate in UMYC regularly scheduled Club Races on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

Westonka Skippers can also use the sailboats at any other time during Free Sailing.

By joining Westonka Sailing, you become a member of UMYC, a club known for friendly, helpful, and fun sailors. And yes, you can participate in all the club’s social events.

Westonka Sailing membership for the 2023 season is only $395.

We are a 100% participant-run non-profit organization with no paid staff

which allows for this fantastic offering at such a reasonable price.

Sail on club sailing evenings as your schedule allows.

Crew new to sailing are paired with experienced Skippers in groups  of 2-4 and learn to sail on the water in a social, low-stress atmosphere

Crew check off all the basic sailing skills as they demonstrate proficiency over time

The Crew then earns a Skipper certificate by passing a test and Skippering for a day

Skippers can check out a sailboat for their use outside of club sailing

Skippers agree to sail at least twice a month to instruct new Crew

Skippers can also refine their skills by sailing with experienced Racing Skippers

Skippers become Racing Skippers by showing advanced skills and knowledge of the rules of racing

Racing Skippers earn their racing number and can participate in any UMYC Races

We only have two asks of our members.

1. Have fun learning and improving your sailing skills by participating in as many Tuesday and Thursday nights as your schedule permits.

2. When your skills advance to the level of “Skipper,” share your knowledge by instructing/mentoring others at least twice a month.

Rest assured. You will receive excellent instruction/mentoring and the opportunity to gain proficiency before being asked to give back. Many of our skippers are UMYC top-level MC scow racers that compete in national regattas.

Membership is limited to ensure we have enough Skippers to instruct members and enough boats so everyone can have reasonable access to these sailboats. So act now. We expect this exciting new program to sell out fast.
