Eight bells ring. His watch is over.
It is with deepest regret and sadness to inform you of the death of Mark Christensen after suffering a very long illness on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Mark was a long time Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club member. Mark grew up sailing on the Upper Lake with his family. From early on his parent’s Norma Greene and Ron Christensen and his step Dad Allan Greene have been key members with the Club. Mark’s brother Gary and his sister Kathy were also active sailors in the Club.
Mark was an excellent MC sailor on our lake and throughout the country. He also was top ranked DN ice-boat sailor having sailed in venues that not only included the U.S. but, Europe, and Russia. Mark would have been best described as highly competitive all-around sailor with a deep passion for the sport of sailing regardless of the season.
Mark had a storied career associated with sailing. He indulged in sail making early in his career with John Dennis and Gordie Bowers and even made a try for the Olympics in the late 70s with the 470. And that’s only part of it all. Although quite in demeanor, Mark was a wealth of information and a great teacher—if you listened.
Members of the Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club community give our deepest sympathies to Mark’s family and his girlfriend Lisa. He will be missed.
